Fairwater planes are physical control surfaces located on the sides of submarine’s sail - diving planes that assist in controlling a submarine’s depth. The USS Albuquerque, on which Nick and Dan served together, was one of the few US Navy nuclear fast-attack submarines equipped with Fairwater planes.
